Vitamin C Serum – How To Correct Hyperpigmentation Naturally

Many people in their 40s worry about hyperpigmentation. mein40 has explored ways to naturally and erase dark spots.

Let’s talk about favourite Korean skincare, clean beauty and health supplements and help you select the right vitamin C to improve your skin’s glow with one easy step!

Why Vitamin C?

  • When skin is exposed to the sun’s rays, there is an uneven increase in melanin production, which results in dark spots, sun spots, and hyperpigmentation.
  • UV rays also breakdown connective tissue in the skin and when skin loses elasticity, wrinkles are formed.
  • Vitamin C helps stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin for plumpy and glowing skin
  • Fights off free radicals which can contribute to wrinkles from sun damage
  • Vitamin C can prevent dark spots from darkening by restricting melanin production
  • Evens skin tone

Finding an Effective Vitamin C Serum

  • Cosmetic companies have compounded the pure ascorbic acid into derivatives making it last longer and less irritating to those with sensitive skin
  • Most vitamin C is water soluble and can’t penetrate easily to reach the dermis of the skin. It’s in the dermis that collagen, a protein that gives skin its youthful firmness and ability to resist wrinkles, is made.

WHEN TO APPLY

  • Best at night, but can also use in the day – high spf
  • Highly concentrated and works instantly
  • Ideally should not mix with certain acids like AHA and BHA

Some Tips on Keeping Vitamin C Serums Effective:

  • Because it is natural, it can turn bad easily. If orange or brown, dispose.
  • Keep in the fridge to prolong the active ingredient.

Choosing a Vitamin C Supplement:

The recommended amount adults should take daily is 400mg. The health benefits include: formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the proper functioning of the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth
Vitamin C is available in either a powder form that mixes with water, or capsule.
Always recommended that you ask your naturopathic doctor about proper dosage and the best formulation that is tailored to your health and other supplements you are taking.

Be mindful that some of the cheaper formulations found at big grocers or stores may not contain good quality ingredients for absorption. I generally am not a fan of gummy or candied supplements. There is a risk that what you are consuming can be filtered out through the urine and not absorbed well, thus not as effective as a supplement made with higher quality ingredients.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

  • Citrus fruits
  • Guava
  • Kiwi (yellow ones are not as tart and my recommendation!)
  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Kale

Best if eaten raw
Turmeric which is also rich in antioxidants
